Inventory of Nests
by Eero Ruuttila
I have begun an inventory of nests.
my ears
like my eyes can no longer follow the familiar old birdsongs
Seed I plant now I set deeper.
I have seen the new weather.
raindrops fall with fierce velocity
seed rows wash out when planted shallow.
Where have the lightning bugs gone?
I remember midsummer’s night when they were out by the thousands
(mosquitoes hatch first, after honeysuckle blossoms fall)
Who ever told you there is no danger?
one life is better than no life, right?
I remember living light in the city
one lamp, a firm bed, the electric fan
they were (are) essential irreplaceables
keep cool when the Big Heat comes to town.
find your warmth when it’s long gone.
Fathers & Mothers do not have all the answers.
